Everything You Need to Know | Replacing Our Carpets

This post is in no way sponsored. We paid all our own dollars and it was worth every cent.

Replacing carpeting was not high on my list. Bathroom refresh, new kitchen backsplash, curtains, mudroom – all things I really wanted to do first. But then we kept stepping on nails. 10 times a day I would step on a nail walking in or out of our bedrooms. Once I was paying attention to the carpets, they seemed gross. We’re the 3rd owners of our home. I have no clue who or what has been on them.

It was driving me through the roof.

With two toddlers, the 14 yr old nails and carpets needed to be replaced.

Everything You Need to Know | Replacing Our Carpets

I didn’t know where to start. I went to big stores. I called around to little carpet places. I was getting really frustrated. I knew I wanted a Mohawk Berber carpet that I had seen online. It was low on cost, durable, clean, and soft.

I also knew I didn’t want to spend $10,000 on this project. It was a necessity and again, with small kids, it’s going to get trashed.

And then I ended up at Lowe’s.

Lowe’s had the carpet I wanted, and for 3 bedrooms (including the master!) it was under $2,000. Sign. Me. Up.

The carpet is honestly perfect in real life and I am thrilled I trusted my gut and went with Mohawk Flooring’s berber.

After much back and forth between two incredibly similar shades of the same carpet, I went with Mohawk Berber carpet in Sea Oat.

Against the cooler white wall paint, I didn’t want the whole room to feel blue. The undertones you pick up on a square swatch will take over when multiples with hundreds of square feet.

I was leaning toward the cooler Dune swatch, but I knew that times by 740 sq feet, I didn’t want that cool undertone.

I am so glad I listened to that little voice and chose Sea Oat.

With a slightly brown undertone, it feel crisp and warm at the same time.

Ok, I know you think I’m insane but look at this video screenshot. Totally different.

I carried these around in my purse, honest to God, to see them under different lights.

You can grab samples for some of the carpeting in store, but for the Mohawk samples it’s $1 per sample online; plus shipping if you are only ordering those. I believe I paid $7 for 2 samples. Totally worth it. If you feel like hunting around, you could probably see the samples in other locations, but it’s not worth the time and gas money.

Carpet-Installation-Process Everything You Need to Know | Replacing Our Carpets

The process was incredibly easy. Once they came out and measured (with a cool laser) to map the room, I went into the store and put in the official order the type of carpet I wanted installed.

You have to have the rooms mostly cleared, they will move beds, but everything else has to go. We piled everything in the bathrooms. These guys were so efficient and left everything in great condition.

The house felt clean, bright, and rich immediately. I’m constantly saying how big of a difference they made. I’m shocked myself.

Most stores have times that they do free installation; wait for one of those times. That’s what we did. We also open a Lowe’s credit card to grab a discount, and then immediately paid that baby off. Their interest rates are no joke.

If you have any questions at all I’m happy to help. I felt really lost in this process. I’m so grateful I was able to grab an affordable carpet with quick installation.

If your carpet is grossing you out, don’t put it off. Next to fresh paint, it’s the most impactful update you can make. It will make your home feel like yours instantly.

How Long Did it Take ?

Whole process was quick! It took a week for our carpet to come in, and they called to schedule my install, and installed it all within a few hours on one day. They haul everything away too!

How Much Did it Cost to Replace our Carpets?

We upgraded the padding and did it during a time of free installation, our total was roughly $1,900. Lowe’s charges $35 to come out and measure which is deducted from your installation costs.

Why You Need to Upgrade the Rug Pad!

We decided to upgrade the rug pad. Everyone harped on it, and it does makes a HUGE difference. The pad needs to withstand the test of time. We went with Leggett & Platt 11.11mm Odor padding. It’s moisture-resistant and inhibits the growth of mold, mildew, and odor-causing bacteria.
