Of everything we did in Dubai, the desert safari was probably the experience that stayed with me the most afterward.
I wanted something that still felt elevated and beautiful, but also more thoughtful and cultural, rather than ATV rides and Instagram stops. My friend had recently broken her collarbone while sand surfing, so I was perfectly happy to skip the more aggressive desert activities. After reading several reviews of Platinum Heritage, this experience seemed like the best fit for the type of trip we wanted.

We booked the Heritage Safari through Platinum Heritage. after realizing there are countless Dubai desert safari options, many of which felt rushed, party-focused, or overly commercial online. From the moment they pick you up at your hotel until the moment they drop you back off, it is meticulously planned, and you feel incredibly taken care of.
The Difference Between This Safari and the “Tourist Safari” Version
One thing I didn’t fully understand before planning the trip is that not all desert safaris in Dubai are the same experience.
Platinum Heritage focuses much more on heritage, conservation, and traditional Emirati culture than the typical high-adrenaline safari packages. The experience includes vintage Land Rovers, falcon demonstrations, a Bedouin-inspired camp, and access to the protected desert conservation reserve.
The overall atmosphere felt quieter, more polished, and less chaotic than some of the other safari groups we saw. If you are searching for a more luxury-focused Dubai evening desert safari experience, this felt much more curated and intentional.
Instead of feeling like a giant tourist attraction, it felt immersive.
Leaving Dubai Behind
The drive out to the desert is honestly part of the experience itself.
Dubai is so visually intense, with skyscrapers, luxury hotels, giant highways, endless construction, bright lights everywhere, that arriving in the open desert almost feels disorienting in the best way.
At one point, I remember realizing there was suddenly… silence.
No traffic sounds.
No buildings.
No screens.
Just sand and wind.
It’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced how overwhelming Dubai can feel visually before that contrast happens.
The Vintage Land Rovers Were Such a Cool Touch
One of the details I loved most about the Heritage Safari was the use of restored vintage Land Rovers instead of modern SUVs.
It made the experience feel more immersive and less like a generic excursion.
The drive through the dunes felt adventurous without being thrown around for entertainment. Some versions of a Dubai desert safari are very focused on aggressive dune bashing, but this one leaned more scenic and experiential.
Personally, I think that balance made it better.
Sunset in the Desert Didn’t Even Look Real
I know everyone says this, but the desert at sunset genuinely looks like it’s been edited in real life.
The light turns completely golden and soft, and with no visual clutter in the background, every photo feels calm and cinematic.
This ended up being my favorite place for photos during the entire trip.
Not because it was the most dramatic, but because it was the simplest.
The Falcon Demonstration Was Surprisingly Interesting
I expected the falcon portion to be more of a quick photo opportunity, but it ended up being one of the more memorable parts of the evening. The guides explained the history of falconry in Emirati culture as the sun set over the dunes, and it felt cinematic.
Dubai can sometimes feel hyper-modern to the point where you forget how much cultural history exists there. This was one of the first moments during the trip where I really felt connected to that side of the UAE. One thing I appreciated about the Platinum Heritage experience was that it felt connected to the environment rather than built on top of it. Seeing Arabian oryx moving through the conservation reserve made the desert feel alive in a way I wasn’t expecting. It shifted the experience from feeling like an excursion to feeling more immersive and intentional.
What I Wore for the Desert Safari (September Edition)
We went in September, and the heat was still extremely intense even in the evening.
I’m very glad I planned outfits beforehand because desert dressing is oddly specific:
- breathable
- comfortable
- photo-friendly
- and practical for sand, open-top Land Rovers, and camels…
I wore mostly lightweight neutrals and flowy fabrics, which worked perfectly for both the temperature and the photos.
What Worked Best
- Linen or cotton fabrics
- Neutral tones
- Flat sandals or closed-toe shoes
- Hair clipped back
- Minimal makeup
- Sunglasses you don’t mind getting sandy
The Dinner & Camp Experience
After sunset, the evening transitioned into a traditional camp experience with dinner and performances.
This part felt much calmer and more intimate than I expected. There were lanterns, low seating areas, traditional music, and regional food rather than the loud party atmosphere I had worried some safari tours might have.
I expected the dinner portion to feel secondary to the desert experience, but everything was beautifully presented, and the entire meal felt much more elevated than a standard excursion dinner setup.
If you are debating between a standard tour and something more elevated, it’s worth going for something more elevated. How many times are you going to drive through the dunes of Dubai?
Would I Do an Overnight Desert Safari Next Time?
One thing this experience made me curious about was doing an overnight desert safari in the future. Once the desert gets dark, the atmosphere becomes incredibly peaceful. I can absolutely see the appeal of an overnight desert safari experience where you stay out under the stars longer rather than immediately returning to the city. That said, I think an overnight safari would be much more enjoyable during cooler months.
I personally think the night was enough. We were all exhausted, and the shower afterward felt amazing.
My Overall Take: Was It Worth It?
Absolutely.
If you only do one major excursion while visiting Dubai, I think this is the one I would recommend.
Not just because it’s beautiful, but because it helps balance your understanding of Dubai itself.
The city is all glass towers, luxury, speed, and spectacle.
The desert feels quiet, slow, historic, and grounded.
Experiencing both is what made the trip feel complete.
