When the Period Talk comes…

Candace-Saalt-Cup-period-Talk When the Period Talk comes...

I posted previously about switching to a Saalt menstrual cup and it raised a significant amount of questions. I love what some call “TMI”. It’s basically my favorite. So the questions and conversations that popped up were exciting for me.

There is nothing better than starting a conversations about the things we are used to vs the things that are “different”.

When I was asked if I would introduce a period cup to my girls on their first period, I had a sudden mind twist.

Yeah? Why not?

Over the past year, Saalt has taken menstruation cups from a small corner of “that aisle” (if you could even find it in store), to aisle end at Target.

END OF AISLE. That is a HUGE deal. Sure becoming mainstream is great for them as a company, and it’s great for all of their menstruation counter parts, but think of the message is sends to young girls.

The message it sends to young children… The message it sends to teens, and women, and husbands, and human freaking beings.

When period cups are as common as bandaids – we can all rejoice.

Our mother’s considered their periods to be gross, a secret they needed to not speak of or acknowledge. Some how, we’ve moved the needle my friends.

I am thrilled that there have been people who have rolled up their sleeves and made necessary changes to an insane industry.

I remember the night I got my period, the Hanson’s lost the Grammy, I was p/o’d and my stomach hurt. I remember saying “oh great now this.” But 30 years later, my period means my body is working. My period means I was able to have two kids. My period is a blessing and even though it can be annoying AF, it’s a sign that the machine is working.

It may sound idealistic, but I want my girls to not feel like their periods are weird or gross. They will have it their entire life. So I’m hoping they take on some end-of aisle-embracing.

Not only will I introduce it to them as an option to choose from, I’ve talked to Jeff about all of the options as well as their pros, cons, and comfort levels – because I’ve got a little of the mom crazies, and I worry I might die and then it’ll be some Full House situation. They didn’t have an actual episode, that I know of, about the fact that DJ and Stephanie must have gotten their periods, but they should have. And now, in real life, guess who uses a menstrual cup? Yup, Candace Cameron Bure.
