Our Girls Share a Room – and a Full Sized Bed

Little Kids Sharing a Bed Bedroom Baxton Trundle Bed

The other night I posted a video of the girls (Reegan, 4 and Julia 22 months) “falling asleep” in their room. Their shared room. Their shared full sized daybed. I was giggling about how the baby stays up doing her own thing for a while, and Reegan falls asleep unfazed.

However, my DM’s were all “OMG They share a room? No crib? Since when?”

I’m so used to it, I forgot this is kind of shocking to most. The girls share a bed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory style, and have since Julia was 18 months old! They made the move. It wasn’t my plan at all, but I will follow their lead as long as they sleep.

Reegan had been BEGGING to share a room with Julia. One night she said to me:

“You get to sleep in a bed with your best friend every night… I want to do that too.”

Put a fork in me. I dragged her mattress to Julia’s bedroom floor and that was that.

And then this started happening…

BUT How Do They Sleep???

It was hit or miss in the beginning.

Julia stayed in the crib for about a month and then she was over it. She wanted to be on the mattress as well.

The mattress was on the floor, so we went for it.

I stayed true to Moms on Call, and adapted Reegan to the routine. Read 3 books. Sound machine goes on. Lights off. I sing Twinkle Twinkle 3 times, and Happy Birthday once. I say “I love you so much!!!” as I walk out the door and lock it behind me.

— How Moms On Call Sleep Trained Julia —

The two of them read books in bed and snuggle up to fall asleep.

Sometimes they fight over random toys, or flashlights. As time goes on and they get better and better at it.

We are so locked into the routine, Julia will say goodbye to me at the end of the songs.

She will stay up and play for a bit, I don’t mind as long as they aren’t pulling each others hair.

Reegan gets over it all pretty quickly and falls asleep like a rock.

They wake up around 6am. One will wake the other and then they start screaming “Mommmmm Daddddd” at the door until we answer.

I have a video monitor and the door stays locked from the outside until then.

Sometimes it goes like this (don’t worry I took her shoes off of her):

How I Made Their Room Decor Fit Their Ages

During all of this, we were listing our house to downsizing square feet and move closer to my husbands office. Reegan was begging for a bunk bed which was quickly vetoed by the grandparents, and I started the hunt for a bed they would both love; making the move to our new home exciting for them.

I vision boarded a few options; the one requirement from my toddlers being a pink bed.

I landed on this Baxton Studio Perry Velvet Pink Trundle Bed.

Once I photoshopped it into the MLS bedroom listing using Pages I knew it would be great for them.

NOTE: You can use the Pages app (like Word for Mac) to make vision boards! I’m addicted. Thats how I do all of my collages and mood boards.

You can get this trundle at a great price. It’s absolutely stunning in person. Whether you have a glamorous toddler, a teen, or your own place… it’s everything you want it to be.

I imagined that they would use both beds in the trundle, but they are so small they just lay in the top full mattress together.

NOTE: The bottom mattress is a twin bed and will only fit a 6″ mattress. I assumed it would also be a full. I was wrong.

The 8″ memory foam mattress we use is affordable and off of Amazon!

Bed in Real Life:

As for the rest of the room, I reused our IKEA photo ledges as book shelves to decorate the entire wall under the shorter windows. Eventually we will be doing this DIY to replace the blinds. I mean… gorgeous.

I love how books add color and function to a room. And it’s not an outlet for perfection. All the books look great thrown up there in any order. And the girls can clean up themselves!

Under that is 3 baskets from Home Goods. Over their bed is a collection of art pieces representing women.

Their duvet cover is from Wayfair for roughly $50 because of situations like this.

And their closet DIY remodel is on it’s way!
